Barbara is an ordained member of both the Clergy of Spiritual Humanism and the Universal Life Church. Barbara taught math and philosophy in the NC public schools for 30 years. After retiring, she decided she was not done and returned to graduate school to finish a “put on the back burner” advanced philosophy degree. Upon graduation, she was offered a teaching position at UNCG and has been doing that for 6 years now. Her areas of concentration are epistemology, contemporary moral problems, and how philosophical themes are played out in literature and movies (particularly science fiction).
Barbara recently had an article published on the paternalistic nature of the government as it relates to laws prohibiting physician-assisted suicide and has just submitted two articles for publication, one on the Jake Sully character in the movie “Avatar” as well as an article similar to this sermon on the morality presented in the Harry Potter series. Barbara lives with her husband, Dennis, also a retired public school teacher now teaching astronomy at High Point University.
